HENDERSON, Ky. – Why should Kentucky legalize medical marijuana? Local activist Brandi Myers asked that question on Facebook, and provided The Gleaner with more than 100 answers from people who are fighting for the access they say will make a huge difference in their life and health:

  • My wife’s Neurologist says she needs it!
  • I support medical Marijuana because I myself have used it for numerous reasons; Back pain, headaches, helping me eat because I have a hard time having an appetite.
  •  It’s Natural Medicine
  • I support medical cannabis because my husband is a cancer survivor and a Crohn’s patient. The medication they want to treat his Chrohn’s with is far more harmful then the Cannabis that helps him eat, sleep and get up and have the strength to go to work every day. That’s why I originally supported medical cannabis but now that I see there is such a need from Kentucky patients and children, that’s why I will not stop! Every taxpaying United States citizen should have this as an option. Natural medicine has helped many people that I have had the pleasure of knowing. While my mother was dying of cancer, she would take her Oxycontin and lay there and Drool on herself. Then she asked me, “Hun please get me some marijuana!” So, I did. she was herself and completely coherent. We had a nice long end of life conversations that every mother and Daughter should have when the time comes. It helped her cope with life and her illness till the day she died. She knew that all the Lortabs and Pharmaceuticals that she had been taking to treat herself had been deteriorating her liver for years making her condition worse. No one I love should ever have to go through this and should be entitled to another option! I don’t talk publicly about my mother much…It still hurt to bad 15 yrs. later.
  • I’m epileptic and have other health problems…
  • It helps people like my 76-year-old Vietnam Vet father with war related injuries. Cannabis is 10x safer than alcohol, tobacco and sugar.
  • No government is going to dictate to me what I can or cannot do in regard to the interests of my own health and well-being. I don’t adhere to unconstitutional laws.
  • No one should have to worry about going to jail and losing their kids for growing possessing and using a plant that God himself put here that has great medicinal properties.
  • I have Rheumatoid arthritis as well as osteoporosis in my spine and both hips. I am in pain 24/7/365!
  • I have bipolar depression, seizures and anxiety. Living like this without it is hell.
  • No one should be denied any medication that helps them. Especially one with as few negative side effects as cannabis. It is cruel, disrespectful and ignorant to deny medicine to people.
  • 38 medications to alleviate pain, all pain was conquered by smoking marijuana. My Dr. Supports this.
  • Crohn’s Disease, anxiety, fibromyalgia, arthritis, complex PTSD, ADHD. I have allergies to several common ingredients in pharmaceuticals. I also tend to have many unusual side effects with medications. Additionally, I would love to have legal access for my three autistic children.
  • I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus and Inclusion Body Myositis. Due to extreme pain I am on pain medication. I have never had the opportunity to see if marijuana would help me. I believe we should have the choice to use it, to see if it would help, if nothing else. For the people who do believe in it have that right but should not penalize those of us who want to use it.
  • To many people are prescribed dangerous and addictive drugs such as opiates that may and will lead to addiction in many cases. Marijuana is not physiologically addictive, and the benefits outweigh the cons. It has been proven that the non-psychoactive chemical in marijuana CBD has been known to cure epilepsy, stop seizures, etc, etc. marijuana is a plant an herb, a flower. Please don’t disgrace it by placing it as a dangerous schedule 1 drug next to heroin. Marijuana is also good for people who suffer with anxiety and depression. Furthermore, it may be a useful tool in replacing other opioids, or drugs used to treat addiction.
  • It helps me with my appetite and my sleep. Along with anxiety a PTSD. God’s creation for man kinds benefit.
  • I have fibromyalgia and a lot of arthritis all over my body live in constant chronic pain!
  • As a cancer survivor, and someone who has lost most of her family to cancer, I have seen how horrible it can be. The cancer is bad, but the treatments for cancer can be even worse. When I was so sick with chemotherapy – something a nurse told me was “the closest you will ever get to dying without actually dying” – medical marijuana gave me the ability to sleep, eat, sit up, and exist. Without it, I was vomiting constantly, in severe pain – bone pain, sickness pain, pain from a double mastectomy, pain from injections, just so much pain… having nightmares, unable to sleep, unable to eat, unable to look at screens, books, unable to make complete thoughts and sentences… marijuana made all of that go away and made me feel like a human being. People should not be denied a medicine that WORKS to alleviate some of the things associated with how horrible chemo can be. It’s sad our legislators continue to prevent access to a lifesaving medication, while so many people suffer daily.
  • As far as for epileptic seizures go, I’ve witnessed seeing the benefits of marijuana usage. A friend that was truly like a brother from another mother had terrible episodes & his prescription medication did not help so he smoked when needed. He went months without any seizures when he had a steady supply, but you got to keep in mind that he couldn’t work due to being considered a hazard. This was in southern Illinois back in the late 90s to early 2000s, I currently reside in west KY. He passed away back in 2005 due to drowning in a bathtub while having a seizure. The weeks up till his passing was terrible for him as he couldn’t obtain any flower to stop the seizures. A week before his death he had an episode at the top of a stairway & fell 30 stairs broke his arm & knocked out three front teeth on top. This caused him to take baths instead of showers so he could just rest his broken arm on the edge of the tub. I know what I shared is a bit rough to read but I honestly support legalization in any form as I truly believe it doesn’t harm anyone & can greatly help those who use it.
  • My best friend of nearly 20 years became sick with gastroparesis and a slew of other diagnosis, I watched my fun loving energetic best friend become nearly a hermit because she can’t get out, she can’t eat she can’t maintain weight. She can’t take 90% of medications that would possibly help her because she’s developed allergies to everything. Her doctors have told her that marijuana is all that’s going to help her have any quality of life. Watching here suffer daily hearing her cries because nothing else will help her and seeing firsthand law enforcement nearly make her choose between life and death has been more than anyone can take. She deserves to LIVE as comfortably as possible and this is her ONLY HOPE.
  • I am a 67-year-old retired teacher. I would love to still be teaching, at least as a substitute, but I am also a spinal cord injury survivor with very painful neuropathy. I have fibromyalgia, drop foot, and hyperalgia, among other things. I believe I should be able to access medications that help me deal with the pain, and that includes marijuana. I do not want, nor do I have, a prescription for any type of pain pill. I need one, but I don’t want one. There is no reason I should be denied the use of an herb with medicinal properties. If you felt my pain, even for a day, you would see why I believe it should my choice to access marijuana without fear of arrest and subsequent expense, not to mention the humiliation.
  • It helps with my PTSD and chronic pain and as a Veteran I shouldn’t have to ask the government if I can use Medical Marijuana that’s not Freedom that’s control it also helps me with other things going wrong with me as I age. I also suffer from constant pain that there are special strains to take for the pain I’m on pain meds now, but they only work for a little while.
  • I have cancer and it helps a lot, but I also think recreational should be legalized because it would bring the state more money back and not only that Kentucky is a commonwealth state legalizing medical and adult use could help
  • It’s a non-addictive drug that’s inexpensive, totally natural, and can help with a slew of ailments. In theory, even poor people could grow it to treat their problems and it wouldn’t cost more than the initial seeds.
  • I’m an MS patient of 17 years. It won’t all fit into one paragraph, and they’ve heard countless stories like mine. I also have an urn with the ashes of my late boyfriend whom I found dead of an opiate overdose on Feb 26, 2017. And his baby brother who passed away just 4 years before that, from a seizure disorder. I’d bring it up there and sit on the steps with proof, stand in front of a crowd and tell my story if I knew it would help. But instead, here’s a visual representation of my life, financial contribution & my future…without cannabis:
  • It’s good for most all illness without side effects. It sure helps me
  • I was put on prescription depression medication without a proper diagnosis and I ended up trying to kill myself. I started trying specific strains and found one of the few things to help silence my mind was marijuana. I will always preach about its uses.
  • I have C-PTSD and marijuana is the ONLY thing that has allowed me to sleep without nightmares, without the horrible side effects of the other so called “meds” I have been prescribed by doctors. I am on meds for my C-PTSD, depression and a sleep med when just one natural plant would help instead of causing other issues!
  • The government should not have the power to tell any adult what to do with their body if they are not infringing on the rights of others.
  • I deal with fibromyalgia, thyroid disease, PTS, and other health problems. Many doctors no longer prescribe pain medicine for their patients, including mine. There are thousands of people like me who’s quality of life could be improved with less suffering if medical were made legal. We need help!
  • My wife has a lot of health issues,, gastroparesis (paralyzed gastro system, Ehlers Danlos, fibromyalgia, and a very low immune system, it hurts my heart to watch her go through, then to top it off I’m in all kinds of shady places looking for medicine and a lot of times you get crap “medicine “ so for me I support legalization to get her exactly what she needs
  • My mom struggled with severe pain, nausea, migraines, painful swallowing all due to terminal stage 4 metastatic esophageal cancer. Medicalization of marijuana would have been amazing to have while she was sick to help with her everyday suffering. It allowed her to control her pain, nausea, and relaxed her esophagus muscles for her swallowing. All of this allowed her to eat a meal, otherwise she would only eat popsicles and let them melt in her mouth. It was awful to watch her waste away due to not being able to eat. More ppl who are I’ll should have access to alternative treatments, not all of us want to take pills all day every day.
  • When I had ulcers as a result of severe anxiety. I used marijuana that not only eased much of the anxiety but also helped with the ulcers. This was especially true when I would lay down at night. Before the marijuana I would have panic attacks several times a week during the night but after smoking just a couple hits at bedtime I was able to sleep through the night.
  • I used to struggle with benzos and opiates after being prescribed to them. I no longer take any medication due to the profound effects of cannabis. If it can help me, I know it can help thousands of others.
  • It was the only thing that helped my friend have an appetite when she was battling cancer. The doc gave her 6 months. She started using marijuana and was able to eat, keep the food down, and GAIN weight and strength! She lived 10 years beyond that 6-month prognosis.
  • Anxiety. disclaimer: high THC and heavy sativa strains give me worse anxiety. I’ve been taking CBD for 1.5 years now, and it’s been great. Totally helped me wean off anxiolytics. BUT, recently went to Colorado and found a high CBD/low THC indica strain that was just incredible. I don’t think I’ve ever been more chilled out in my life. CBD is a great start, but it’s way more expensive than it should be, and it’s not even as effective as the CBD leaf i could likely grow at home, and barely even gives you any euphoric experience. I’d like to see how that justifies sidelining all cannabis when I don’t even get high.
  • Medical marijuana can replace medications that cause a plethora of unwanted side effects.
  • I have a spinal injury L5-S1 which limits my daily activities, I’m on pain meds so I can function. Since the injury I now have panic and anxiety attacks. I was also diagnosed with PTSD. For me Marijuana makes it so I can manage the panic and anxiety attacks as Well as the PTSD.
  • I have severe anxiety and it helps so much way more than the alprazolam that I’ve had to be on for over 20yrs PRN.
  • I’m in a hell of a lot of pain and don’t want internal bleeding disorders and a lifetime of constipation, laxatives and liver damage, caused by nsaids and prescription drugs. Watched too many people do that to themselves and I’m not going out like that.
  • People should have the right to medicate themselves with a natural plant.
  • It can treat so many different ailments all at once. I have migraines, anxiety, depression, PMDD, back and neck pain from spinal degeneration, TMJ, and insomnia. Nothing has ever worked for all these issues except cannabis. It would help me and all the other Kentuckians who are suffering from their own health problems.
  • I Battled an aggressive brain cancer upon diagnosis in 2014. Given 6-18 months without radiation, I went against doctors’ orders and used high THC Cannabis Oil that was able to rid of the cancer within 3 months. I was removed from the neurology clinic as well as their oncology clinic because I went against their protocol w radiation. A scare again in 2015, went the same route, and today I am still living having had zero help from drs since. I’ve gone from 10+ medications a day, down to 0. Cannabis is not the fix-all for every person or situation, but it needs to be an option and an available option, and patients need to be given safe and legal access. We’re good people having to break bad laws, and some like myself do it to stay alive and have a quality of life.
  •  As a 10-year Medical Marijuana patient and card holder from Colorado I should not be deprived of my chosen medication or must turn to illegal means to get it! It makes no sense that marijuana has acceptable medical use in most states and US territories but not ALL. IT’S TIME. LISTEN TO *WE THE PEOPLE* for once!
  •  It saved my life a few years ago, when battling severe health issues and continues to allow me to be the best version of myself.
  • I support cannabis for all, medical and recreational (since it’s all medical in some form or fashion anyway), and it’s time to take back our rightful place as cannabis cash crop king like we had before prohibition. I support home grow the same as I support growing dandelions and my own rosemary and other herbs. I support my clients being able to have me make their salves and poultices with the ingredients they want, leaving out the petroleum and polymers and phosphates they don’t. I support the science that has come out in high favor of cannabis utilization in our bodies and how it helps alleviate a LOT of dead-end therapies for certain illnesses – where the pills and infusions leave off, cannabis goes further. I support liberty and justice for ALL, and I support our law enforcement being able to focus on other situations that truly need it, while having the resources they need. I support our teachers and state employees having their retirement reinstated in full, while having the funding to open true rehabilitation centers and expand mental health care in order to bridge the gap between mental illness and addictions of all kinds. I don’t just support medical marijuana; I support CANNABIS as the cash crop it was and still is for the whole of our state!!!
  • We in a free society should have the right to choose anything to benefit our health.
  • I AM NOT A CRIMINAL. Cannabis is medicine.
  • I’ve seen firsthand what it does for a state financially and how it helps the people of that state with medical related issues and even those that are not benefiting from the medicinal value it helps with increased personal wealth due to the unemployment numbers going down and the increase in property values.
  • Statistically someone I love has or will develop cancer or addiction. I want to know I did my part to help my friends and family have access to safe, natural, effective medication that can help cure or at the very least improve their quality of life.
  • The opioid dependency will decrease, and I prefer a non-addictive plant over pharmaceutical manufactured drugs.
  • Cannabis is medicine and patients deserve relief and symptom management options!
  • The government shouldn’t govern over our use of herbs. This plant has huge medicinal value and we should be able to use it freely as medicine, with no limits.
  • Marijuana is one subject I have studied for past 4 to 6 years of my college path. It is a plant that was outlawed due to racism and negative propaganda. The science shows more positive than negative results and outcomes from usage. I need this myself to help with medical conditions and my doctor approves but can’t because of our system. Please voice your opinions and facts not only to your state representatives but also inform your family and speak up for your support. Don’t be afraid to talk about it.
  • I support medical marijuana because people deserve a choice in their healthcare. My little hometown is #1 in the nation for opioid addiction; we must do something different. Our children with seizure disorders deserve the right to try. Our veterans, gave their minds and bodies to causes they did not have to fight but our govt has the audacity to tell them they cannot use a plant to help them when they come home? It’s time. Legalize!
  • It has a wealth of medical benefits it is an industry that would help Revitalize Kentucky’s economy and produce jobs in banking as well as retail
  • I support it because I am a Iraq War Veteran with PTSD it helps me to face a world I otherwise would have no interest in facing I use it for pain as well as I have my L5 and S1 disc in my back fused together I have bad knees and I have I steel pin in…
  • “It’s the right thing to do!”
  • “It helped me kick the meds and cigarettes.”
  • “PTSD, pain, sleep.”
  • I support medical marijuana because it’s a natural herb been used since before any of our family trees were even thought of.
  • “It’s the right thing to do when you have a medicine that will help people in so many ways.”
  • “I support people being able to get the best medicine for their health without politicians and police getting in the way. I support cannabis because I own my own body and I am the only one with the right to tell me what I can and can’t put into my body.”
  • “CANNABIS HELPS my PAIN AND DOESN’T DO ANY DAMAGE TO MY BODY LIKE THE pharmaceuticals DID.”
  •  “Life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
  •  “Healing”
  •  “Pain”
  • “It’s my human right to use herbal therapy to cure my illness.”
  •  “I’m hurting.”
  • “Helps calm my stomach”
  • “Freedom”
  •  “Cannabis got me clean from opioids.”
  •  “Think about the humanity. My zip code prevents me from living a better life! I am begging, I am suffering, lawmakers hold the key to my health and welfare…and they allow me to suffer…”
  • “Two words – Common Sense.”
  • “It lowered my a1c from 11.3 to 6.4 in less than 6 months…and it’s still in the 6. Range 4 years later….no more sticks no more nasty pharmaceuticals… Cannabis saves lives!!!”
  •  “It’s good for way too many medical illnesses and mental illnesses to even argue about its period.”
  • “It’s a PLANT”
  • It’s criminal to deny medicine to sick people.
  •  “Freedom of choice”
  •  “There is absolutely no reason why folks should suffer by the government keeping something illegal that helps their symptoms and helps them feel better.”
  •  “PTSD, back pain, hip pain”
  •  “I’m epileptic and have other health problems…”
  • Cannabis heals, relieves pain, and helps relieve anxiety and depression.
  • It’s Medicine
  • It helps my neuropathy. No drug does
  • No deaths and plenty of positive results. Meanwhile, pharmaceutical companies are killing people.
  • Cannabis is one of the safest substances in the whole human medicine cabinet, much less toxic than either alcohol or opioids and useful for a long list of problems. It should never have been banned. It should be no more controversial than parsley; if you don’t think people should ever get high, then don’t, but stop believing the myths.
  • I’m tired of living everyday with painful symptoms. I have ulcerative colitis and Crohns disease and DESERVE RELIEF
  • It’s a miracle plant, put here for our use by God. The “illegality” of CANNABIS is an outright lie! We are supposed to enjoy personal FREEDOM from gov’t interference, yet because of a lie we are persecuted for using a plant. I have lost people …See More
  • It helps with all my problems
  • It saved my life. It stops the depression cycles and anxiety allows me to sleep.
  • It’s better than alcohol
  • If it can be of benefit to one individual with an ailment it is all worth it.
  •  Anxiety depression sleep aid migraines ptsd
  • It’s medicinal and safe. I have Autism and it helps me feel normal. I used to take over 20 different pharmaceuticals, but now since using cannabis I only need my thyroid hormone.
  • LIFE over death.
  • All-natural feel good medicine. Went to pain clinic today no opioids just the injection. Honestly, I don’t want the burden or hassle that comes with their meds. Not to mention the side effects.
  • It works better for pain than anything on the planet and doesn’t wreak havoc on the body like those deadly opiates!
  • It’s better for pain and many illnesses than anything man made
  • It helps my pain, mood swings, apatite and insomnia.
  • I want to move back… Michigan is to cold
  • I would like to have a natural alternative to mass production medicine
  • What I put in my body is nobody’s business.
  • It’s lifesaving, not a killer
  • I’m tired of popping pills every day to feel better from depression and anxiety. My body pains my inability to sleep. There are so many chemicals in these pills. It’s crazy. Nonetheless there is money that can be made if we can go beyond medical use.
  • I’m a veteran. It kept me from eating a bullet. It puts me to sleep and wakes me up. It’s my companion and crutch every day.
  • I can’t take pain meds. We should have a choice!!
  • Government has demonstrated no ability to tell people what to eat or not eat better than they can figure out on their own.
  • Ohio’s program is unjust and think Ky will end up having way better one.
  • It’s one step closer to recreational marijuana.
  • Before I state my case, can anybody show me where the government derives the power to dictate what I ingest? I rest my case.
  • I use it. It is real medicine.
  • I support decriminalization, it’s God’s work and not for man’s profit.
  • My son is an army veteran, infantry, with two deployments to Afghanistan and I have seen the difference it makes in his quality of life
  • They already lost calling it medical marijuana. Free men should be able to ingest anything they choose.
  • Kentucky For Medical Marijuana
  • I support medicinal cannabis because I know firsthand what this miraculous plant can do for anxiety, PTSD and cancer. It has helped me not take many pharmaceuticals that had many adverse side effects which calls for more pills. It helped me get off drugs the VA put me on that changed me as a person for the worse. The pills made me suicidal. God put the miraculous plant here for us for a reason. It’s natural and that is fine by me.
  • It’s a great medicine for many illnesses, but it really comes down to a freedom issue! The right to choose.
  • I believe in its ability to help people. As a person who has Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, glaucoma, AtrioVentricular Nodal Reentry Tachycardia (my heart rate shoots up to 210-230 at any given moment to do to an extra wire in my heart)I believe that medical marijuana would benefit me and get me off of a lot of the prescription medications I take on a daily basis.
  • For all the opioids patience! To get off them and control their pain with.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis! That should say it all!
  • My daughter, aged 28, was born with a seizure disorder. We have tried dozens of anti-seizure medications over the years. She deserves the option to use nature’s healing.
  • It can’t kill you like opioids…no ODs!
  • It helps my depression greatly arthritis severe sleep apnea. Makes life better for me Kentuckians deserve medical marijuana.
  • I support medical marijuana in Kentucky because I should legally be allowed to use the one and only medicine that helps my Complex PTSD. Without marijuana I cannot function daily & I deserve a legal medicine that improves my daily life. A plant can stop my suffering. Legalize it. Please.
  • It’s a better/safer choice for pain than the dangerous FDA Approved garbage that will kill you.
  • It’s a medicine that helps most illness without side effects. It sure helps me
  • It helps my ptsd, anxiety, and depression. It also helps with my attitude and patience. With my ptsd and depression I don’t want to do anything some days but if I take a few puffs on bad days I’m fine, I’m not focusing on my triggers. There are so many people going through worse that needs it, people say marijuana will lead you to harder drugs I feel like that isn’t true, doctors have prescribed people with pain killers and I know personally that is worse because some people I know have gone from pain killers to meth, I haven’t met a soul yet that has went from marijuana to meth.
  • Corrupt law enforcement officers are making a ton of money off it! If your law enforcement officer and you’re not putting the cuffs on your dirty officers, you sir, are the problem…
  • I support medical marijuana because of the healing medicinal properties, whether it be for cancer, anxiety, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, PTSD, or TO FIGHT OPIOID dependency. I’ve seen people with my own eyes beat big pharma with their so-called man-made drugs!!
  • I have ruptured disk and pain down my leg. Total hip replacement headaches
  • MMJ and Kratom gave me my life back. I was in a wheelchair because of a spine injury and on 19 meds a day. I’m no longer in a wheelchair. I’m 90% pain free and I only take my migraine pills as needed. I have a much better quality of life in 2 years thanks to both natural plants
  • As far as for epileptic seizures go, I’ve witnessed seeing the benefits of marijuana usage.
  • I know what I shared is a bit rough to read but I honestly support legalization in any form as I truly believe it doesn’t harm anyone & can greatly help those who use it.
  • I am a brain tumor and have been using my pain pump since 2009. I topped out of Morphine, Dilaudid, and am on Fentanyl along with oxy for break thru pain. I was able to us just using Medical Marijuana and not have to use hard hitting opiates. Every time the bill does not pass means I can’t come off the pump.
  • It has a wealth of medical benefits it is an industry that would help Revitalize Kentucky’s economy and produce jobs in banking as well as retail
  • Medical marijuana can replace medications that cause a plethora of unwanted side effects. I believe legalization either medically or recreationally would reduce the amount of people who get addicted to opioids or other harmful drugs, thus leading to reduction of overdoses. You cannot overdose on marijuana. Medical marijuana can be used for a variety of medical conditions, including epilepsy, cancer, eating disorders and so much more. Marijuana can be used in many different forms other than smoking, so there aren’t really any limitations on how to use it. There are so many other reasons, but you said one paragraph.
But instead, here’s a visual representation of my life, financial contribution & my future…without cannabis.
  • If I didn’t use cannabis, I would not be able to leave my house a lot of days…I would much rather use marijuana than take the pills prescribed for anxiety, depression, etc.
  • And I’d rather not go into the more medical part of my stuff on here like that. But I don’t mind talking about anxiety/depression and how much it relieves that for me.
  • I deal with fibromyalgia, thyroid disease, PTS, and other health problems. Many doctors no longer prescribe pain medicine for their patients, including mine. There are thousands of people like me who’s quality of life could be improved with less suffering if medical were made legal. We need help!
  • I have bipolar depression, seizures and anxiety. Living like this without it is hell.
